2015 Volkswagen Polo GTI Rendered

by on May.06, 2014, under Auto Review Specs

Volkswagen has given the whole Polo family of superminis a makeover, but there is one important new model that’s still not ready. We`re talking about the hot GTI, which should be out early next year to take on stiff competition from the Fiesta ST and Clio RS. Cosmetically, it`s not going to be radically different, but there are subtle changes planned, there to emphasize the hot hatch`s sporty nature.

This rendering, created by automotive digital manipulator Theophilus Chin, gives us a good idea of what we can expect from the new GTI. The image features the same LED headlights as the normal Polo and a brand new bumper.

Based on the design of the Golf GTI, a new set of fog lights with slashes of black plastic create an edgy look. We`re honestly not sure if Volkswagen will adopt such a design, since it`s an unnecessary departure from the normal Polo look.

While we can`t tell you if it will be better looking, we can confirm that the car will be dynamically competent. A manual gearbox option will be added, making the Polo GTI not only more fun to drive, but also cheaper. Power will also go up from the current 180 PS to 192 PS, with similar increases being felt in the torque range.

Both these features have already been confirmed, but mystery surrounds the displacement of the engine. We believe that a brand new EA888 engine will be dropped under the bonnet, a larger 1.8-liter like you got in the previous generation car. Currently, the little GTIs and their sister cars from Skoda and SEAT [and Audi, but it’s not a hot hatch] are sold with a 1.4-liter engine that`s both supercharged and turbocharged. Volkswagen has systematically removed this mill from many cars because it’s complicated to make and the fuel economy benefits of the smaller block have been outweighed by updates to larger blocks.
