by on Apr.25, 2013, under Auto Review Specs, Porsche

Tennis superstar Maria Sharapova has become Porsche’s brand ambassador, signing an initial three-year deal.

Russian tennis superstar Maria Sharapova has been selected by Porsche to be their first ever global brand ambassador, with the four-time Grand Slam champion set to represent the German carmaker for the next three years. While choosing a woman for the role might raise some eyebrows given almost 90 percent of 911 buyers are men, Porsche is adamant the tennis champ is the perfect match, sharing similar attributes of elegance, power and charisma. Like a Porsche, she’s also pretty hot to look at and known for making a mean grunt when at full tilt.

Last year, Sharapova won a white 911 Carrera S Cabrio at the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Stuttgart, and she can now add Porsche to her impressive commercial portfolio that includes Nike, Tag Heuer, Tiffany & Co. and Samsung that brings her in a cool $30 million a year.

Porsche celebrates 50th anniversary with the new 911 RSR

by on Apr.16, 2013, under Porsche

Porsche has released a new video starring the 2014 911 RSR to celebrate the brand’s 50th anniversaryPorsche 911 RSR 28.3.2013.

Porsche says the new 911 RSR “is the most concentrated form of this classic sports car that we’ve ever produced” and represents the “quintessence of a success story.” Unveiled last month and based on the seventh-gen 911, the 2014 Porsche 911 RSR will race in the World Endurance Championship.

Power comes from a 6-cylinder, 4.0-liter boxer engine producing 460 HP (338 kW) connected to a new 6-speed sequential gearbox with paddle shifters mounted on the steering wheel. The car has carbon fiber doors, dashboard, rear wing and center console, while to further lower its weight Porsche’s engineers installed a lithium-ion battery and polycarbonate windows.

Webber signs 5 year Porsche deal

by on Apr.15, 2013, under Cars, Porsche

Mark Webber has signed a five-year deal to switch from formula one to Le Mans-style sports car racing from 2014.

That is the claim of Radio Le Mans, citing information from the paddock of Sunday’s Chinese grand prix in Shanghai, where the 36-year-old Australian endured another nightmare race weekend.

China was just one race on from the ‘Multi-21’ team orders affair, and where rumours flourished that Kimi Raikkonen is being lined up to replace Webber at Red Bull next year.

Earlier this month, Germany’s Bild newspaper reported that Webber and Porsche had been in contact about a deal for 2014, when the famous sports car maker intends to race a Le Mans-style LMP1 prototype.

A Porsche spokesman had not denied the Webber rumours, saying only that “Whether and to what extent additional drivers are added (to the existing roster) will be decided at a later date”.

But AAP news agency quoted a Porsche spokesman on Monday: “There is a test plan (for Le Mans) and for sure Mark Webber is not part of them.Mark Webber

“We can have perhaps some formula one drivers in the future but it is not necessary.”
T
he latest reports follow wild rumours that Webber’s nightmare weekend in China, including fuel woes in qualifying and a wheel falling off during the race, is a Red Bull conspiracy to reinforce his de-facto ‘number 2′ status.

“He (Webber) has no confidence in his employer,” wrote correspondent Simon Pausch in Die Welt newspaper. “And who can really blame him?”

But team boss Christian Horner dismissed the conspiracy claims as “complete rubbish”.

Dr Helmut Marko added: “We don’t put a car together for millions of euros only to deliberate sabotage it.”

Even Mercedes’ Niki Lauda had to agree: “No sane person could intentionally put a wheel nut on wrong.

“The cars do 320kph here and if one flies off, it is literally life or death.”

Horner backed Webber – who has pledged to at least see out his 2013 contract – to bounce back.

“He’ll be fine. He’s a tough competitor,” he said.

Porsche Celebrates Golden Jubilee of its Iconic 911 Sports Car

Porsche Celebrates Golden Jubilee of its Iconic 911 Sports Car

Though no one could have guessed it at the time, the Porsche Type 901 that made its debut at the IAA show in September 1963 would live on for five

decades and become an automotive icon.

Of course, it came to be known as the 911 due to Peugeot having already registered all three-digit car designations with a “0” in the middle, forcing a name change.

The amazing thing is that, the 911 survives to this day despite featuring an engine hung out behind the rear axle that may provide unparalleled traction, but is also a recipe for sudden oversteer due to the pendulum effect all that mass creates.

Yet in spite of many changes, this –seemingly illogical- configuration has remained constant in each and every one of the more than 820,000 911s that have been sold to date.

The other is the shape: it may have evolved significantly over time but, when you put the original next to the latest 991-gen model, the continuity is obvious.

With 2013 marking the 50th anniversary of Porsche’s icon, the Stuttgart-based automaker has planned a series of events to celebrate the 911. They start with the “Retro Classics” show on March 7-10 at the Porsche Museum, where an early-model Turbo Coupe, a 1981 Cabriolet study, a 1997 road-going version of the GT1 and the pre-series Type 754 T6 chassis, designed by Professor Ferdinand Alexander Porsche, will be on display.

Over the course of the year, an authentic 1967 model will be sent across the world on all five continents to be displayed at events such as the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance in California and the Goodwood Festival of Speed in the UK. It will also attend historical rallies and other racing events; after all, the 911 has racked up an impressive two-thirds of Porsche’s 30,000 (!) race victories.

Moreover, from June 4 until September 29, the Porsche Museum will host an exhibition of the 911’s history and development while in spring its own publishing house will publish an anniversary edition with the title “911×911″.
